The Story of Novita
Novita’s story began in 1928 when Ernst Gylfe established Helsinki Wool Spinning Mill Ltd after travelling to Bradford, England, to learn about long-fibre worsted yarn production. The company later moved to its mill in Koria, Kouvola, where Novita continues to produce yarn today.
Over the decades, Novita has become closely connected with Finnish knitting culture. During the Second World War, the company’s workers used available wool to knit socks for Finnish soldiers - an early example of the practical role yarn played in everyday Finnish life.
Almost a century later, Novita remains family-owned and continues to oversee its yarn production, from raw materials through to finished yarn. Wool remains at the heart of the company, alongside an increasing focus on responsible fibres and more sustainable production.

The Origin of Laine x Novita
Laine x Novita brings together two names with deep connections to knitting: Finnish yarn manufacturer Novita and Finnish publishing house Laine.
The collaboration began when Laine founder Jonna Helin was invited by Novita to create a new yarn. The project was particularly meaningful to Jonna, as Novita was the yarn she learned to knit with as a child alongside her mother and grandmothers.
The resulting yarns were developed with Novita and West Yorkshire Spinners in England. Both the 4ply and DK versions combine Falkland wool with Bluefaced Leicester and Bluefaced Kerry Hill wool, creating yarns with a soft feel, good stitch definition and a carefully considered colour palette.

Our Laine x Novita Range
The Laine x Novita collection combines Novita’s long history of yarn-making with Laine’s contemporary approach to colour and knitwear design.
A versatile fingering-weight yarn made from a blend of Falkland wool and British wool. The yarn has a soft feel with clear stitch definition, making it suitable for lightweight garments and accessories.

- 4 ply / fingering weight
- 400m per 100g skein
- Soft with good stitch definition
- Suitable for garments, shawls, accessories and colourwork
The DK version uses the same carefully selected wool blend in a slightly heavier weight, making it ideal for everyday garments and accessories.

Novita Edith 2 Ply
Novita Edith is a fine mohair and silk yarn with a beautifully light construction. Use it on its own for an airy fabric or hold it alongside another yarn to add softness and a delicate halo.
