West Yorkshire Spinners has been at the heart of the British wool industry for nearly 30 years. Known for their premium yarns spun in Yorkshire, they specialise in natural fibres that connect makers with sustainable, long-lasting knitwear.
We had the chance to speak with their Marketing Manager, Rhiannon Hinitt, and Business Development Manager, Danielle Deane, to discover the story behind the brand, their unique yarns, and what makes British wool so special for crafters in Australia and around the world.

The story behind West Yorkshire Spinners
For those discovering West Yorkshire Spinners for the first time, can you tell us a little about the story behind the brand?
The West Yorkshire Spinners mill has been commission spinning for almost 30 years. The brand was later established in 2012 when we identified a gap in the UK hand crafting market for British made, natural fibre yarns.
Our first yarn was Fleece - Bluefaced Leicester DK in natural shades. This launch saw us championing British wool and its fantastic heritage, the appetite was strong and over the last 14 years the momentum has continued, and we have grown to the extensive range of yarns and patterns you see today.

What Sets West Yorkshire Spinners Wool Apart
What makes British wool different from fibres like merino or alpaca in real use? And what does “spun in Yorkshire” really mean?
For years, the hand knitting market has been dominated by ultra-soft fibres like merino and alpaca. But softness alone doesn’t define quality. British Wool differs from these fibres because it is shaped by landscape and climate.
Breeds such as Shetland have evolved to withstand harsh conditions this produces fibres that are stronger and more resilient. In hand-knitting this translates to garments that hold their shape, less pilling over time and knitwear that lasts for years, not seasons.
We spin all our yarns under one roof, at our mill in West Yorkshire. Our skilled operatives have a longstanding love and knowledge of wool and natural fibres, understanding the unique sheep breeds and how to blend fibres to produce the finest yarns. We pride ourselves on our process, our craft, and our attention to detail.
What do you believe is the value of British wool today, and why does it still matter?
Makers can buy with assurance, that their yarn is mulesing-free, 100% biodegradable, naturally renewable and supporting land biodiversity across the UK.
At a time when sustainability is at the forefront of protecting our planet, choosing British wool is one of the most rewarding ways to contribute towards a more natural word.

West Yorkshire Spinners’ Commitment to Sustainability
Sustainability is becoming increasingly important to makers. Where does your wool come from, and what accreditation does it carry?
Wool is one of our greatest natural resources and it is invaluable to know where our raw materials come from. Through the British Wool licensing scheme, we are assured of responsibly sourced fleece, from the field to our mill. When you see British Wool Shepherd's crook symbol, it guarantees that the product contains wool grown by UK sheep farmers, supporting a centuries-old tradition of responsible farming, high-quality craftsmanship and sustainable sourcing.

Spotlight on Bluefaced Leicester and Signature 4ply
Many makers know and love your Blue Faced Leicester range. What makes Blue Faced Leicester wool so special, and why do you use it so often?
Among the British breeds, Bluefaced Leicester holds a unique position: it bridges the gap between traditional British wool and the softness typically associated with merino – while retaining the strength and character of UK fibres. One of BFL’s defining characteristics is its lustre. Fibres reflect light, giving a subtle sheen. Finished garments have an almost silky appearance with excellent drape. BFL is one of the main fibres used within our ranges as it offers a rare combination of softness and strength.
Are there specific yarns in your collection that work especially well for lightweight garments or layering pieces?
If you’re looking for something more ‘everyday’ opt for Signature 4ply, which is available in a huge range of solids and unique prints.
We love the beautiful colourways in the Signature 4 Ply range. Where do you typically find inspiration for your colour palettes and collections?
The fibre always comes first; we think about the maker and the types of projects a yarn may be used for. Much inspiration comes from nature and the surrounding landscapes; we also like to keep up to date with trends and popular palettes and blend these influences into collections where possible.
