What ply yarn is best with what size needle? 

As a general rule of thumb, thinner yarns, such as 2ply (lace weight) or 4ply (fingering weight) work best with smaller needles (such as size 2-3.5mm), while thicker yarns, such as 10ply (worsted weight) or 12 ply (bulky weight) work best with larger needles (such as size 5-6mm). Ultimately, as a beginner you’ll want to follow your pattern’s required gauge to decide what needles to use. Over time, as you build up your skill and experience, you can experiment with altering your patterns or designing your own.

What size are the needles for knitting?

Knitting needle sizes are usually measured in millimetres (mm). The most common sizes are 2.25, 2.5, 3, 3.25, 3.5, 4, 5, 7 and 10mm.

What size knitting needles are for beginners?

Generally, if you're just a beginner at knitting, we recommend 7mm needles and 14 ply wool (for younger children or maybe a little smaller). Once you get the hang of things, you can experiment with different sizes to see what works for the pattern you’re doing.

How to hold knitting needles?

There are many ways to hold knitting needles, which ultimately comes down to personal preference. Some people like to ‘throw’ the yarn over the needles with their right hand, also called knitting English style. Whichever way you choose, be sure that the yarn is wrapped comfortably around your fingers in a way that produces an even tension.
