Recommended Needle Size for 10 ply yarn

Commonly they use between a 4.5mm and a 5.5mm knitting needle or crochet hook. 

Common Yarn requirement

To knit a beanie you will need approximately 100g of yarn. Adult garments really depend on style and size and can use anything from 600g up to over 2kg of yarn. A lap blanket will take 400-700g.

Selecting the right yarn

When selecting yarns it's important to be aware yarn weights are not an exact measurement. Some yarns classed as 10 ply by one manufacturer could be a thick 8 ply with another. This is why it's important to knit or crochet a gauge swatch. This allows you to both check the feel of the fabric and the needle size to use (again all knitters have a slightly different tension).

The fibres used to create the yarn also alter the finished piece. Cotton yarns tend to give a firmer finish to wool and fluffy yarns such as mohair and alpaca bloom to give a beautiful halo which often allows for a looser knit.

What size yarn is 10 ply?

10ply yarn is known as Aran weight in the UK or Worsted weight in the US. It is also known as 4- Medium weight yarn

Can I substitute aran for worsted?

Since aran and worsted are both medium-weight yarns in the same weight category (Category 4), they can often be used interchangeably, just make sure you knit your gauge swatch!

Can I use chunky wool for an aran pattern?

If your pattern calls for an aran weight yarn you should really stick to 10ply yarn. Swapping for chunky yarn would be a very difficult substitution as it's a different weight and will mean adapting a lot of the pattern.
