What kind of yarn should you use for socks?

Socks can be knit from yarns of various weights. For example, you might come across thin, super fine 2-ply lace socks, cosy 10-ply lace socks, or even 20-ply slipper socks. However, sock yarn is specifically designed for socks and is typically composed of a blend of wool and man-made fibre such as nylon or polyamide.

Wool yarn provides warmth and elasticity, while synthetic fibres offer durability, which is necessary to withstand the wear and tear socks go through on a daily basis. Although sock yarn doesn’t have to contain nylon, it helps enhance the durability of the material. You can use regular yarn to knit socks but we wouldn’t recommend it as your socks will be less durable and may wear out more quickly.

How much yarn do I need for a pair of socks?

Typically, you’ll need 50g of yarn for a pair of kids’ socks and 100g for a pair of adults’ socks. However, this amount will vary based on the size and width of the foot, so it’s a good idea to buy extra just in case.
